The moment when summer clothes are being packed away for storage is, in many ways, the ideal opportunity to sort through them properly, since every item is already being handled and considered anyway. Doing the sorting separately, on another day entirely, means going through the same pile of clothes twice for no real benefit.
As each item is picked up to be packed away, it takes only a moment to ask whether it is actually worth keeping for next year. Clothes that no longer fit, that were barely worn all season, or that have simply lost their appeal can be set aside there and then, rather than being packed away out of habit.
Having a spare bag or box nearby specifically for items that will not be kept makes this decision much easier to act on immediately. Without somewhere obvious to put them, unwanted clothes tend to get packed away regardless, simply because sorting them out feels like an extra task rather than part of the same job.
Keeping only what earns its place back
Items that are genuinely worth keeping deserve a slightly more careful approach than the rest, such as a quick wash before storage or a check for any small repairs needed before next summer. This attention costs very little extra time when it is done alongside the packing rather than as a separate task later on.
Clothes that are set aside to be given away can be dealt with straight after the sorting session, rather than being left to sit in a bag for months. A bag of clothes that lingers by the door for too long often ends up being packed away again out of sheer convenience, undoing the whole point of sorting in the first place.
Combining the sorting with the packing means that when the boxes are opened again next year, everything inside genuinely deserves to be there. The wardrobe that emerges the following summer feels noticeably lighter and easier to manage, all for very little extra effort at the point of packing.
